DAVIDSON & CHARLOTTE, NC – Classical Public Radio 89.9 WDAV announced today the 2016 Young Chamber Musicians Competition (YCMC), powered by OrthoCarolina. Aspiring young ensembles from across the nation with members between the ages of 14-25 are invited to submit video performances for a chance to win their share of $10,000 in cash prizes. Finalists will be invited to perform in a live, judged concert on May 1, 2016 in the Duke Family Performance Hall on the Davidson College campus.

Now in its third year, the Young Chamber Musicians Competition is expanding its scope. Thanks to the generosity of OrthoCarolina, the prize purse has more than doubled from previous years. “The talent we’ve seen come through this competition has been incredible,” notes Blair Primis, OrthoCarolina Director of Marketing. “We’re thrilled to help cultivate these musical gifts and look forward to seeing the skill we attract with an even more rewarding prize.”

Another exciting addition is the live broadcast. The entire adjudicated portion of the competition, to be held on May 1, 2016, will be heard live on 89.9 FM. “Part of the mission behind the Young Chamber Musicians Competition is to foster the next generation of classical musicians,” says Will Keible, WDAV’s Director of Marketing and Sales. “The experience and exposure gained from a live broadcast such as this are vital to the careers and confidence of these talented young artists. WDAV relishes the opportunity to share our finalists with a broader audience.” The competition can also be seen in person at Davidson College’s Duke Family Performance Hall. Due to the success of previous years, YCMC has moved into this larger concert hall to accommodate the growing attendance.

This year’s panel of judges includes notable figures from across the region’s music community: Alan Black, Charlotte Symphony Principal Cellist; Dan Locklair, composer and Professor of Music at Wake Forest University; and John Gordon Ross, Music Director for the Western Piedmont Symphony.
Submissions for the competition will be accepted beginning January 13, 2016. Details of the competition, including the competition timeline and how to enter, can be found at ycmc.wdav.org.
